If you enjoy spending time in the great outdoors you may be placing yourself at risk for
contracting a tickborne disease. The summer months are generally considered tick season, but
you may contract a tick bite as early as April if there is an unseasonably warm spring.
Lyme is the most commonly diagnosed tick-borne illness in the United States. The disease is
named for the community of Lyme, Connecticut, where residents experienced an epidemic of
acute arthritis in the summer of 1975. The disease is caused by a bacterium (spirochete)
called Borrelia burgdorferi that is transmitted by a tick bite.
